Some films promise all kinds of crazy, tough-to-watch stuff and end up being middling...at best. Some don't ever promise a thing...and manage to wallop the viewer in the gut due to lack of expectation. Then...there are those films that just don't fuck around. Bite looks to be the kind that doesn't fuck around.
Honestly speaking...I've been a little tired of the genre lately. After our short film Gelato Giallo has wrapped...all I've been doing lately is just diving deeper into my ever-growing collection of vintage gialli and ignoring whatever hits the multiplex every other week. Hell...I haven't even bothered to play catch up on the genre stuff that I've missed over the past few months. If I were to really place blame for my lack of enthusiasm for the genre as of late...it was probably due to me being so let down by It Follows after all of the mammoth expectations that I had for that film. It's not that it was bad, mind you...just disappointing - for me, at least. Then I watched the trailer for Bite, a new film by Chad Archibald that has been causing quite a stir at recent screenings. Apparently, some people fainted and puked during a screening at this year's Fantasia Film Festival...or something of that nature. I was too lazy to verify the facts...sorry. But, still...the trailer looks really cool.
Check it out...
Here's the official Plot Summary (which you could probably surmise from the trailer):
While on her bachelorette party getaway, Casey, the bride to be, gets a seemingly harmless bite from an unknown insect. After returning home with cold feet, Casey tries to call off her wedding but before she's able to, she starts exhibiting insect like traits. Between her physical transformation and her wedding anxiety, Casey succumbs to her new instincts and begins creating a hive that not only houses her translucent eggs, but feeds on the flesh of others. As her transformation becomes complete, Casey discovers that everything can change with a single bite.
Who knows when the film will see any kind of distribution on this side of the Canadian border? And, frankly, we're very much used to marketing tactics and propaganda used to inflate hype into a film around these parts. However, on the less cynical other hand, this gives me such a Starry Eyes/Croneberg's The Fly kinda vibe...and I FUCKING LOVED me some Starry Eyes. So, who knows...maybe this will deliver the disgusting goods. I'll keep you Deviants posted on the particular when and where of the film...as they become available. In the meantime...here's a cool poster...
Thanks for reading,
bryan.
