Evil Dead 2013 was a good film, despite what many detractors would have you believe. It was a fun return into the universe that we all loved, technical flaws be damned. There was even talk about an inevitable sequel that would connect the polarizing new with the beloved old. And now we're hearing that director Fede Alvarez is departing this universe!
UPDATED: According to Fede's Twitter...he says...JUST KIDDING! Apparently, Evil Dead 2: Rise of the Deadites is still on! Their just gonna concentrate on Army of Darkness 2: Return of the Chin first.
I loved the new Evil Dead film for its gory, unapologetic genre fun...and for its ability to bring Raimi's deadite world into the mainstream forefront. Hell, it was the first Evil Dead film with a hard R rating to debut at number 1 at the box office on opening weekend! Pretty fucking cool for a horror film of this kind. And while there were certainly the haters in the audience that simply had to nitpick the fuck out of it and find shit that they could wave around and throw scorn at, genre fans could not disagree that Alvarez made a successful horror film that warranted a return to what he set out to create. But, according to an interview conducted with his main writer, Rodo Sayagues, it seems that Alvarez will not be a part of any kind of sequel planned (or not planned).

RODO SAYAGUES: "Look, I am sorry to tell you this but that movie won’t happen. Evil Dead 2 is not going to happen, at least not with us involved. We left that project many months ago because we preferred to put our energies on other things. I don’t know if the producers still have intentions of making it. But what I can tell you is that we are not part of that project."
So, this Rodo dude kinda sounds like a dick, huh? Almost as if the studio didn't wanna give these guys a huge payday so, they decided to protest by walking from the project. Look, I love the new Evil Dead film...that's no secret. And while Alvarez certainly helped with the look of the film, he is not the only talented young filmmaker out there. I'm sure if Raimi and co. want to make another trip into that particular world, he'll just pluck another director from the celluloid fields...or just do it himself. He's already been confirmed to helm the sequel to Army of Darkness...so, there's that. Personally, I'm cool either way. While I'd be down to watch Jane Levy reprise her role as Mia, I wouldn't be heartbroken if they never made a sequel. It's just kinda weird how, for a moment...there was excitement all around about having Mia and Ash run around slaying deadites together...and now this. Hollywood is a funny place, Deviants.
Thanks for reading,
