I love unearthing obscure horror gems that no one has ever heard of before and, usually, foreign horror is the perfect medium to discover new films. The landscape is so vast that you can pretty much hop from one country to the next uncovering an endless supply of untapped horrors! Since we are currently in Asia...let us Unearth these obscure Asian Horrors together...shall we?
When I first watched the 2005 J-horror film Noroi: The Curse, I was legitimately creeped out by the whole thing. It was another found footage film that dealt with supernatural elements. However, since I watched this film way before the Paranormal Activity films, it was something a bit left of center...much more oddly paced than the usual thing I've seen before.
What made it truly scary was the way that it was filmed in documentary style. I guess I'm drawn to those "Haunting" documentaries that follow the doomed path of whatever family happens to move into a cursed house...so, naturally, Noroi really worked for me.
Directed by Kôji Shiraishi, the film centers around a documentary that was filmed by a supernatural investigator named Masafumi Kobayashi, who is said to have vanished after trying to explore the paranormal events that take place during the span of said film. He is determined to connect the incidents to the legend of an ancient demon called the "kagutaba". Unfortunately, for our protagonist, his search uncovers more than he ever bargained for.
I won't spoil the film anymore. Instead...check it out for yourself below and let us know what you think! It's a tad on the longish side...but, well worth it. Please enjoy...
