I recently watched Shriek of the Sasquatch, which I understand is meant to be a throwback to the horror/exploitation films of the 70's...a decade where many iconic horror films were born. I had a hell of a time watching the film with some of the Film Deviant crew! Fun stuff!
The film stars the lovely B movie actress and model, Sarah French. You might've heard of her if you've ever Googled her alias, Scarlet Salem. Sarah is a delightful up and coming talent headed for awesome things in the genre. She recently attended the Days of the Dead in sunny Chicago and, unfortunately, we were unable to hook up with her for an interview. So, we did the next best thing. We did a long-distance Q&A over a cup of coffee. Here is what that was like...
FILM DEVIANT: What is your first horror film memory?
SARAH: When my sister and I were about 6 or 7 years old and we somehow conned our grandma into renting Child's Play for us. We showed her the cover and told her it was a kid's movie - HAHA! That movie scared the HELL out of me...which made me want more. I loved it!
SARAH: I have a few, and they tend to change every year, but I'd have to say John Carpenter's The Thing.... I adore all Carpenter films!
FILM DEVIANT: What inspires you?SARAH: Everyday life inspires me!
FILM DEVIANT: What is the last album that you've purchased?
SARAH: Jeff Loomis, Plains of Oblivion. Also, my boyfriend and I have recently been collecting records and getting them signed by the bands. The most recent one was Black Dahlia Murder's Ritual. We actually got that signed a few weeks ago.
SARAH: Meeting the fans, catching up with friends, networking and promoting. I love it all!
FILM DEVIANT: Have you met anyone in the genre that has blown you away?
SARAH: Yes! Meeting Cassandra Peterson (Elvira) at Texas Frightmare Weekend a few years back. I told her how big of an influence she is for me and she told me that I was hot. Yup...that was a great moment!
FILM DEVIANT: What are some of your guilty pleasures?
SARAH: Caribou Coffee!!
(Laughter)
SARAH: Insidious - I loved it! It went back to the 80's roots and was scary as hell. Excited for part 2!
SARAH: My weapon of choice would have to be a sword or machete... its quiet and easy to cut the head off or stab the brain. I'd pick a mall. Have you seen Romero's, Dawn of the Dead? Exactly!
(Laughter)
FILM DEVIANT: Do you have any upcoming projects that you would like to talk about?
SARAH: Yes!! I have a film coming out next year called Insectula! I have a decent role in the film so, I'm looking forward to this one. And...who doesn't love killer insects?!
Synopsis: A giant alien mosquito-type insect is drawn to earth from the CO2 pollution in search of blood. Del, a government agent, loses loved ones to the creature and is on a personal vendetta while the Dr. Kempler is captivated by it and attempts to help the creature cleanse the earth.
Another film in the works is Hallow Pointe! It's an all practical special effects werewolf film.
Synopsis: Henry and Jane are hoping a weekend there will help rekindle their love for each other. Everything seems to be going as planned...until the sun sets and the full moon lights up the sky.
Also, another film I did a few years back that is now available for sale (AMAZON) is Shriek of the Sasquatch!
Synopsis: It's 1979 and a couple are on a road trip.. which puts them unwittingly on a collision course with Bigfoot. Will either of them survive to learn the secret of the Sasquatch? Pseudo-retro drive-in fun, complete with film damage.
FILM DEVIANT: You are an amazing talent that should go onto to better things than the B movies that you usually star in. You have a knack for conveying subtle emotion with mere gestures and you definitely have a screen presence. I sincerely hope you find work in bigger films in which to display your talent.
