Clowns are fucking scary.
When used correctly in a horror film, that is. If you think about it...clowns can be the perfect device in a slasher flick. I'm actually surprised that there aren't more films with this premise every year. If you consider the simplicity and the budget-friendly aspect of a clown, it's kind of a no-brainer. However, a horror film about clowns can present issues for the filmmaker as far as atmosphere goes. The perfect clown film balances horror and comedy effortlessly (Killer Klowns from Outer Space), since the main purpose of a clown is to make people laugh. Yet, perhaps the most memorable clown from horror film history is the supernatural Pennywise from Stephen King's It. Iconic and terrifying all in the same breath.
Speaking of terrifying, writer/director Damien Leone has done something truly special with his short film Terrifier. He's crafted that unique blend of old-school exploitation horror with uncomfortable black humor. There are nods in the film (which clocks in at just under 20 minutes) to older slashers, however, Leone definitely makes the film his own. Terrifier is an inspired attempt at horror filmmaking and I hope we see this short film turned into a full-length feature one day.
The film stars Marie Maser as the hapless victim in the film. Art the Clown is played memorably by Mike Giannelli. He will send chills down your spine. Please enjoy...Terrifier.
