So, the new bloody photos of Chloe Moretz as the new Carrie hit the interwebz last night. Shall we discuss?
Before we get into the new pics. I want to make it absolutely clear that I wanted Deborah Anne Woll to play Carrie White from the very first talk of remaking this haunting masterpiece. When Woll's Jessica first appeared on True Blood a few years ago, she actually reminded me of Sissy Spacek's virginal awkwardness and striking good looks from the original Carrie. Plus, Woll's about the same age as Spacek was when she first played the role. Also, if you ever get a chance to watch Darren Lynn Bousman's Mother's Day remake, you'll see that she's got that passive daughter thing down perfectly. Aaaannnd...Woll boobies!
However, Hollywood doesn't listen to small time blog writers...so...
Now, while I admit that it is damn near impossible to know the outcome of a film just by staring at pictures that the nice people from Entertainment Weekly just published, you can still extract a certain impression when you gaze at both blood-soaked beauties side-by-side. Sissy Spacek exudes an immediate provocative menace in her original role. Try to imagine that you're staring at her blood-drenched image for the first time and you'll feel a certain sense of "we need to get the fuck out of here ASAP". Now when you look at Chloe Grace Moretz in the remade role, you might feel a kind of pity for the character. The kind of pity that one might feel after someone gets dumped with slime on Nickelodeon. Moretz is a young beauty all her own, but she just doesn't hold the same weight as Spacek did the first time around. Now, one could argue that the different poses from both photos are from two very different sources of emotions. Moretz just got pig blood dumped all over her...so, she's reacting to that initial shock. While, Spacek is looking to barbecue some motherfuckers for dumping said pig blood all over her. Still, I just don't think Moretz has that certain power to convey what will be called of her in the impending moments.
On the other hand, Jullian Moore is an inspired choice to play Carrie's lunatic mom, Margaret. I never really thought much of Piper Laurie in the original role, other than crazy religious psycho-bitch. Now don't get me wrong, Laurie is an accomplished actress in her own right. Her body of work spans longer than most actors will ever live to see. And her performance in the original Carrie still goes down as one one of the more memorable crazy bitch performances in the genre. However, when your crazy religious mother role requires a more layered calculated kind of loony...look no further than Jullian Moore. There's a kind of quiet unhinged aura that Moore brings to her roles. It's never really been tapped and so the choice to cast her as Margaret is a genius one. Aside from Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don't Cry) directing this film, Moore's involvement has my interest piqued. Still, it might've been pretty interesting to cast Sissy Spacek as Carrie's mother this time around. Hmmmm...
Anyway, as I said, it is difficult to surmise the results of a film based on some exclusive photos that Entertainment Weekly provided. Still, it's hard to imagine that a PG-13 remake will hold any kind of candle next to Brian De Palma's masterpiece. We'll see, once the remake ultimately makes it into theaters on March 15th, 2013. I'm sure a trailer is already on the way. We'll have that for you once it becomes available. In the meantime...
