Family Demons is one of those films you will either love or hate.
This film combines both paranormal and psychological aspects very well, there is a sort of silent hopelessness the film gives off from the very beginning that keeps you intrigued throughout every minute of it (which is good considering I have the attention span of a squirrel).
Family Demons mainly focuses on a despondent young girl named Billie (Cassandra Kane) and her alcoholic bitch of a mother (who's name is never given). Kerry Reid, who plays the role of the crazy ass mother, did a spectacular job! Every word she screams at poor Billie makes you want to curl up in a fetal position and apologize for any wrong doing you may have committed. Think of their relationship as that of Carrie's and her mother (minus the freaky religious crap from the 1979 film [obviously]) And of course, let's not forget Sean the boyfriend (Alex Raralowicz), who we only get a mere taste of before the fun begins.
Billie is mentally and physically 'tortured' by her mother on a daily basis (when she's all boozed up of course) and this torture is evident throughout the film. Although we do find out halfway through the film why the mother is such a sadistic bitch, we can't help but cheer Billie on when she takes a hammer to her crazy ass mom's head. Multiple times. As if she were in a whack-a-mole competition. Seriously...it's great.
Anywho, there's a sad through-line to this film and sort of a story with lessons to be learned...in a "those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it" sort of way.
Family Demons, in my awesome opinion, is a great film to cuddle in bed with. It's not your typical blood and guts horror film, but it does posses an amazing story and array of wickedly fun twists that'll keep you in awe. For the most part, I believe Australian director Ursula Dabrowsky did an amazing job at keeping up with the suspense during the course of the entire film.
It's not every day that you come across a cool horror movie that leaves you wondering...what the hell just happened?! Every twist in this film is very well executed. With the low budget restraints (6,500 US bucks!) that Dabrowsky was given to work with and the great film that came out of it, you can't help but wonder and smile at the thought of what she might have been capable of had she been giving much more to play with. I, for one, cannot wait to get my hands on the follow up Inner Demon to see where she takes us next!
So, with all that said, Deviants...if you love suspense and crazy twists, then this beautiful mind fuck of a film is just for you! Enjoy.
Deviantly Yours,
Jess
