REST IN PEACE: Lina Romay (1954-2012)

I'm not sure if you are familiar with the lovely Lina Romay. She's been in more films than most actresses working today. If you've seen the films...The Bare Breasted Countess, Barbed Wire Dolls and Caged Women...then, you know who Lina Romay is. Sadly...she passed away last week.

My first experience with the late Lina Romay was back in like 1986. I was a young teenager who just discovered the world of adult film. My best friend worked at a video rental store and had access to hundreds of adult VHS videos. So, when the boss was away...well...you know the rest.

One day we happened upon a film entitled The Loves of Irina (the hardcore American version of The Bare Breasted Countess at that time). We popped the video cassette into the VCR and I fell in love.

Although Romay's character, Irina, is silent throughout the entire film (she's a mute), she had an undeniable screen presence. A presence that captured my young mind and has caused me to search out some of her other films as I got older. My personal favorite came to be director Jess Franco's (Lina's longtime husband and film collaborator) Ilsa, the Wicked Warden. If you're in the mood for something completely sleazy and wrong on many levels....Wicked Warden will most definitely deliver on almost every level of depravity.

Anyway...we're called Film Deviant...and there is no other actor/director partnership that has personified "deviants of film" more precisely than Romay/Franco. I sincerely hope the Academy acknowledges Lina's name tomorrow night at the Oscars. If not.....FUCK THE OSCARS!

Lina Romay will be missed by millions of fans the world over. There will never be another quite like her. Rest in peace, Rosa María Almirall Martínez...you left us too soon.

"I earnestly wish an end would come to this bloody race I am forced to run."

Thanks for reading,

bryan.
