Sucker Punch is a film not meant for the film critic. It's full of fandom glory and should be viewed by a lover of pure enthralling entertainment. Zack Snyder is a master of filming balls out edge-of-your-seat action sequences and he proves that in this film. Does it have a complicated plot? Does it move you emotionally? Will you be leaving the theater happy? Mostly.....yes.
Now...I realize this film is not a horror film....even though there are nazi zombies and demonic samurai in the movie. However, it got beat out by Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2 in its opening weekend...so, you could say that it deviates from the normal kind of film. Hell...you can pretty much say that about any film directed by Zack Snyder.
The premise is sort of complicated. A young orphan girl is sent to an asylum and is ordered a labotomy in which to cover the malevolent tracks of her old perverted stepfather, who has done some bad things. She seeks to escape this place but, she must find 5 items in order to do so. She enlists the help of four other girls and together they begin an adventure for their freedom. It gets a little complicated as Snyder explores the world of the daydream. A sort of escapist world that you make up to drown out the sucky reality of your real world. So...it gets a little murky when you try to keep up with what's real and what's not. But, that's all secondary for the real reason you came. To watch hot girls in cosplay do battle with samurai demons, armed android guards and pissed off mother dragons. As far as that goes....Snyder hits a grandslam. The cinematography is really beautiful and the special F/X is mind blowing. It's all on some next level type shit. And yet...the concept of sisterhood is the underlying glue that holds it all together. Hopefully, a young girl on the verge of being a woman gets the gist of this concept more than just cool ideas for her cosplay themes.
So...you'll no doubt see all kinds of harsh criticism of Sucker Punch...but, it shouldn't stop you from going to a film that will really entertain you on many levels. I ask....in what way would you review a rollercoaster ride? There really is no way. It grabs you and fulfills every bit of adrenaline rush you may require. I'm sure Zach Snyder's goal was to create something more ambitious on an intellectual and spiritual level....but, what he's created sort of falls short of that intended goal and instead showcases a series of tightly directed action sequences and slick camera play that really exemplifies the talent of his direction. All the actors here do their thing, as well. There's no real stand out and no real disappointment. All of it fits nicely in this tale of deception, beautiful steampunk action and the quest for your ultimate freedom. All the girls are really nicely fresh faced and I will mention that Carla Gugino does a spot on Russian accent.
Fuck everything negative you may have heard about this film. Sucker Punch is a must see experience directed by a film maker who is years ahead of his time. It's the word "awesome" caught on camera...and(!) it's not in 3D. Oh...and one more thing....if stuffy film critics tell you not to watch something cool like this...that's usually a good indication that you need to watch it.
