Speaking of 1985...Silver Bullet is the late Corey Haim's best work. It's one of my favorite werewolf movies of all time and it is a film not to miss this Halloween season. The film is adapted from a story by Mr. Stephen King called Cycle of the Werewolf. It marks the first time King is mentioned on this list and, just like Argento, it won't be the last.
There's a bunch of unexplained killings going on in the small rural town of Tarker's Mills, Maine. A beheading here...a slaughter there...yet, no one knows the exact cause of the murders. You know who knows?? That's right, baby! Corey Haim in a wheelchair...that's who knows! However, no one believes him. Everyone thinks he's high or something. I'm sorry....that was mean and uncalled for. But, you know what else is mean and uncalled for??? Leaving your loved ones and depriving your fans of your enormous talents at such a tender age because you have a problem with drugs! Why, Corey??! Why??!!!
I'm sorry...where was I? Oh....So, Lucas wants to be on the football team to impress a girl and....huh....what? Oh...that was the wrong movie....Oh...damn.....Ok...
So...the killings continue in Tarker's Mills and little Marty (Haim) suspects that it may be a werewolf but, no one believes him. Not even his older sister (played wonderfully by Megan Follows) who happens to narrate the entire film.
There's this suspicious looking priest whose garage smells like a slaughterhouse. Could it be him? Perhaps...perhaps not. You'll have to see it for yourself...which, by the way....if you haven't already seen Silver Bullet yet, I honestly don't know what you are waiting for. It's a classic and, along with the other werewolf film on this list, it's definitely one of the best werewolf films you will ever watch. The whole film is filled with a creepy atmosphere that will haunt you after the credits role. The tension in the final scene is among the best that there is. Expertly directed by Daniel Attias, who basically does a lot of House episodes these days, the film isn't really a mystery as much as it is a cat and mouse (or rather...a wolf and child) build up to the final moment.
Silver Bullet is a fun little film that evokes a time when horror films were coming out left and right. 1985 was definitely a popular year that birthed several horror classics including Demons and Fright Night (both on my happy little list)...as well as other notable films like Re-Animator, Return of the Living Dead, Lifeforce, and Argento's Phenomena.
I think you're gonna like Silver Bullet...I really do. It's got something that most films don't have these days...let alone horror films....it's got heart. And that's why I'm recommending it to you, my faithful blog reader and dear friend.
