Everybody's got a favorite story from Creepshow...and if you don't then you have obviously lost your way in life.
My good friend, Craig, and I were actually discussing the greatness of this film just the other day. There's seriously something for everyone in Creepshow whether you're a fan of zombie films or you're into sci-fi or you like monster movies...this film has it all.
Written by Stephen King and directed by George A. Romero, the film brings together the talents of two of the most significant figures in the world of horror.
Five tales of terror are presented in a comic book format. The first is about a demented old man returning from the grave to get the Father's Day cake his murdering daughter never gave him. The second stars King himself as a dim-witted farmer discovering a meteor that turns everything into plant-life...everything. The third concerns a vengeful husband, played by an over-the-top Leslie Nielson, burying his wife and her lover up to their necks on the beach. The fourth is about a creature that resides in a crate under the steps of a college...this one stars Adrienne Barbeau (always had a crush on her). The final story has the late E.G. Marshall playing an ultra-rich businessman who gets his comeuppance from cockroaches.
Creepshow is much like the other anthology film on my list, Trick 'r Treat in which it is not particularly scary as it is awesome. It's a film that only feels a little dated if you are watching it for the first time...in which case I don't even know why you would call yourself a horror movie fan. Otherwise, all the rich colors and stories come back to you much like an old friend.
There's been a couple sequels to this one that don't really deserve a mention other than the fact that "The Raft" story from Creepshow 2 makes that film worth watching only for that entry. Otherwise, the original stands as a classic and will go on to endure repeat viewings every Halloween season.
My personal favorite story from Creepshow has always been "The Crate". Aside from Adrienne Barbeau and her lovely..."talents", that particular segment has always been particularily creepy for me ever since I watched it when I was young at the local Drive-In Theater.
4.5 out of 5
