Where the fuck is Robert Pattinson?! Where the fuck is Bella?! Where in the living fucking fuck is my Team Jacob??!!
Oh........ummm....nevermind.
So. I returned a couple movies over at Berwyn Video and noticed the sign that stated "Rent 2 Get 1 Free On Thursdays & Saturdays". I asked the friendly clerk if it was ok to grab another one...since I didn't notice the sign upon rental of the two DVD's this past Thursday. He looked over to me and said..."sure, buddy...grab another one on the house." I felt like hugging the good man. I walked over and grabbed Moon by director Duncan Jones.
"Who'd have thought? All the energy we ever needed, right above our heads. The power of the moon... the power of our future."
In a perfect world Sam Rockwell would win an Oscar for best male actor. He's that fuckin' good. I knew he was good...but, that good?? He's basically acting against himself and Kevin Spacey's voice. His acting is what basically drives the entire film about an astronaut whose 3 year service to a company called Lunar Industries is coming to an end. He is stationed along with an assistant robot named GERTY (voiced by Kevin Spacey) at a base on the moon in order to collect helium-3 from lunar soil in which to create a cleaner means of energy for Earth. That's the basic premise, friends.
It's easy to see the inspiration drawn from old sci-fi classics like 2001: A Space Odyssey, Outland and Alien. But, Moon is entirely its own film. While Sci-Fi is not really my favorite genre, I do love a good intelligent film about outer space. There are no aliens running around killing people in this film. The monster is in Sam Rockwell's performance. It truly is a spectacle to see the man act out different levels of sanity and emotion. This would be a great film to show to students in an acting class.
Moon is a bit slow paced compared to a Sci-Fi film about killer aliens...but, I can assure you that the payoff is great. It's one of those movies that keeps the tension in the acting and you're on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next to poor Sam.
If you love good well-acted science fiction then, I would recommend Moon.
9 out of 10.
Thanks for reading,
bryan.
